This quarter's MapGeo Community Spotlight – the City of Waltham, Massachusetts!

Few cities encapsulate the "best of both worlds" better than Waltham, Massachusetts. Located just 9 miles upriver from downtown Boston, friendly and convenient are just a few ways to describe Waltham - a city rich in history and innovation. Perhaps the most impressive thing about Waltham is that it has evolved beyond its roots as one of America's first mill towns. Nowadays, Waltham is a truly modern city full of diverse neighborhoods, natural beauty, and world-class universities (Bentley and Brandeis). Take a walk down Moody Street and you will find a lively strip full of great restaurants and shops. Head over to the Upper Charles Reservation, and you will find a kayaker and bird watcher’s paradise. Waltham also boasts a Frederick Olmsted-designed Park at the 109-acre Storer Conservation, at the same time being the home to the headquarters of the Fortune 500 company, Thermofisher.

Continuing with the city spirit of evolution, Waltham has recently upgraded to the MapGeo platform to bring the best of both worlds to their online GIS platform - something powerful, yet easy to use. The city will provide access to a wide range of geographic information through MapGeo. The public can explore interactive maps featuring property maps, zoning information, and environmental features. Waltham’s MapGeo site also displays unique layers, highlighting historic stone walls and survey points in the Prospect Hill Park Trails, Shady’s Pond Conservation Area, and the Beaver Brook North Reservation.

Waltham configured a custom theme on their MapGeo site showing Crime Locations symbolized by the category of crime. A pop-up with details about the crime location was also configured to provide additional information such as date/time, the type of incident, and the location. This theme is publicly available on their site: https://walthamma.mapgeo.io.

ArcGIS ArcMap Migration to ArcGIS Pro – Annotations for MapGeo

If you have recently migrated your data from Esri’s ArcMap to ArcGIS Pro (since your last MapGeo data refresh) and you have annotation features (dimensions, lot numbers, etc.) please let us know. In migrating the annotation features to ArcGIS Pro, the annotation database schema changes. We will need to make changes for the data to load and display properly.

Data Uploader Reminders

If you have a data uploader (file, CAMA, or spatial data) configured for your MapGeo site, please remember to LET US KNOW if any changes are made to the database schema or if your CAMA database vendor changes. Any unexpected changes like this will cause your uploader to fail.  This can be prevented if you proactively reach out to us, and we can update the uploader to expect the new database schema.

LEAD Service Lines can be added to MapGeo as a searchable database!

The EPA’s new Lead & Copper Rule Improvements (LCRI) establishes stricter guidelines around, and an inventory of, a community's Water Service Line Inventory by October 16th, 2024. The LCRI requires that the Water Service Line Inventory be continually maintained and publicly available – your existing MapGeo site is a perfect place to host your Water Service Line Inventory. Please reach out to MapGeo Support staff or your Project Manager if you are interested in adding your inventory as a new map theme on your site, or if you are interested in getting assistance to create your community’s inventory!

Steep Slope Protection Areas – Lebanon NH

The City of Lebanon, NH recently added a new Steep Slope Protection Areas theme to their MapGeo. Steep slopes are regulated within the city, essentially informing where one can locate a structure, build a driveway, etc., as well as what erosion control measures are required.  Although steep slopes occur throughout the city, the regulations only apply within the Rural Lands zoning district.

The End of The Fiscal Year is Here!

If you have any remaining budget that needs to be used by June 30th, consider implementing a MapGeo add-on such as these new themes, new data views, oblique imagery widget (Sanborn Oblique Analyst), or a Data or File Uploader. Contact your Project Manager or the MapGeo support team for more information.

If you also have a Spatial IQ for MapGeo subscription with “special projects” support, remember to talk to your Project Manager soon about how to get the most value from that investment before the end of the fiscal year.
