September 2024

We're excited to share MapGeo news with you!

The Traveler's Open has been held at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut since 1984

This quarter's MapGeo Community Spotlight – Cromwell, CT!

Tucked along the banks of the Connecticut River in the crossroads of Connecticut, is the Town of Cromwell. Cromwell is known for housing TPC River Highlands, the renowned golf course that hosts the Travelers Championship, a premier stop on the PGA tour. But, if you look beyond the fairways, Cromwell’s real allure lies in picturesque locales such as River Highlands State Park, with riverfront trails, tranquil natural surroundings, and friendly locals mingling at one of the many new restaurants that have sprung up in a rapidly modernizing town.

Cromwell is making the most of its resources by now equipping its residents and stake holders with the MapGeo platform. MapGeo allows users to explore a wide range of data, from land records and zoning information to environmental features like wetlands and riverbeds. By offering easy access to parcel and sewer system information, Cromwell’s MapGeo site enhances how the community engages with the town’s landscape and planning efforts.

The Town of Cromwell, CT first implemented their MapGeo site back in 2012 and has added additional themes and data over the years. Most recently they created a Dataview that focuses on their sewer system.

Instead of searching for an address or a parcel, they can search on a sewer asset ID for either a sewer line or manhole. Their information panel has been configured to display details about the selected sewer line as well as showing abutting manholedetails. Apop-up window was set up to link to their sewer plans, which opens the plan document from which the GIS line was created.

Organized Theme Groups

Did you know that you can sort the map themes on your site into theme groups? While many of our clients already take advantage of this feature, using theme grouping is a great way to clean up your Themes panel and allow users to have a smoother experience. Theme groups allow you to sort the themes on your site into categories. Below are examples of theme groups. Each theme group will have the name of the group with a number next to it which indicates the number of themes within the group. Lastly, by clicking on the theme group name, a dropdown appears showing the themes that are contained within the group, as shown in the image on the right.

Basemap Legends

Even though basemaps are easy for many of us to understand, some users may have difficulty reading a map. Map Themes contain legends that illustrate what is visible on the map, but what about a legend for the base map features? A basemap legend can be added to your site to show users what certain symbols and features mean, as shown in the figure below: A map of a city Description automatically generated

To add a basemap legend to your site, contact the MapGeo support team for more information.

Statewide Imagery

Great news for our Connecticut clients - the 2023 statewide imagery is available! We are working to get this imagery added to your site as soon as possible. The state is still processing the building footprints(>100 sqft) and 1ft contours. Once that data has been released from the state, we will reach out with more details to get those layers incorporated into your site as well.

A reminder to everyone, if your state has newly released imagery, please let us know and we will take a look at the source imagery to determine if it can be added to your site.

If you need imagery for your community, we can do a custom flyover for you or we can talk about other imagery services that we provide such as licensed streaming imagery subscriptions from Vexcel (https://sanborn.com/vexcel-imagery/) and Hexagon (https://sanborn.com/hexagon-imagery/).
